Flying Corgi Ranch regularly hosts riding clinics by classical horseman Don Paulhus. Don has spent many years studying riding in the classical tradition, a style of riding that benefits riders of any and all disciplines. Don is one of just a handful of trainers in the U.S. that Karl Mikolka (former Chief Rider at the Spanish Riding School) endorsed as qualified to pass on the system of training to which he adhered.
Don’s training sessions help horses learn better to accept the burden of their riders’ weight, thereby gradually eliminating involuntary tensions, defensive postures and behaviors.
Over time, gaits are restored, and each horse carries itself as nature provides. Riders gain a better understanding of mechanics and learn to feel and guide their horses’ progress, which creates a foundation for future development. Riders learn to bring along a young horse correctly from the beginning. Horses in more advanced training can be greatly improved by acknowledging problems due to tension and balance issues. Don teaches that a temporary return to basics can be beneficial for all horses, regardless of their experience.
Equine bodywork encompasses many modalities of hands-on therapy, such as massage and acupressure. A good specialist customizes treatment to the horse’s specific needs. Joan Differding is trained in several different methods of equine bodywork, and she synthesizes the various techniques in order to best help each individual horse. Joan strives to release areas of tension, correct asymmetries and restore healthy posture and free movement in the horse. Her approach is gentle and respectful of the horse and invites the horse to be a full participant in the therapy. Joan takes photo and video records during each session and provides a written report with her findings and suggestions of exercises for the owner to do with their horse to further its healing.
